I know what it feels like to sit in front of a client and not have all the answers.
When I began my career back in 2002, fresh out of TAFE in South Australia, I did what most wouldn’t—I went straight into business ownership. I was eager, driven, and ready to help people feel better in their skin.
But it didn’t take long before I hit a wall.
I quickly realised that what I’d learned in training didn’t equip me for what I was seeing in the treatment room. I could cleanse, exfoliate, and recommend… but I didn’t understand. Not in the way that makes you feel truly confident. Not in the way that lets you connect the dots between a client’s concerns and their skin’s deeper story.Â
Through the skincare line I was using at the time, I started integrating naturopathic thinking into my consultations—slowly at first, and then with growing confidence. I collaborated with Naturopaths and began crafting external skin health programs to match their internal ones.Â
It was unheard of in 2002. Back then, acne was treated with gel cleansers and oil-free moisturisers. EFAs were considered “alternative,” and the idea of working alongside a naturopath to co-create a treatment plan? Practically unheard of. Nobody was talking about the gut, mentioning hormones, and certainly no one was linking stress, medications, or diet to what was showing up on the surface.
But I couldn’t ignore what I was seeing. It worked.Â
I enrolled in a naturopathic nutrition course to deepen my understanding because I knew that if I wanted to truly change my clients’ skin, I had to look at the whole person, not just the symptoms.
That philosophy has been the anchor of my work ever since.
The skin is part of a whole, interconnected system. When something is out of balance internally, the skin is often the first to raise the alarm. As Skin Therapists, we have a responsibility to see more, know more, and do more—safely, ethically, and holistically.
Over the last two decades, I’ve built a career around that belief. I’ve been a clinic owner, a spa manager and an education manager for global brands. I’ve taught on cutting-edge technologies, led training across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond, and educated on advanced skin therapies to thousands of professionals at every stage of their careers.
Today, you might know me as the face of Skin Education International.
But behind the brand, I’m a Skin Therapist first, supporting my clients with their deeply personal skin journeys.…and yes. I, too, have second-guessed my recommendations. I’ve struggled to find the right education. I’ve sat in classrooms full of complex jargon that left me more confused than confident, and I’ve felt the pressure to keep up with a constantly evolving industry.
So I made myself a promise:
If I ever had the chance to teach, I’d do it differently.
I wouldn’t speak in circles or try to sound clever.
I’d focus on clarity.
I’d strip away the overwhelm.
I’d blend the best of scientific precision and holistic thinking.
I’d make sure therapists walk away knowing how to apply what they’ve learned the very next day in the treatment room.
And that’s exactly how I teach.
